Route and Itinerary
Day 0: Johannesburg
Spend a day getting to know this lively and fun financial capital of South Africa. Spend a few hours at the excellent Apartheid Museum or explore the rejuvenated inner city.
Day 1: Johannesburg to Drakensberg
360 km. Our first day ends in the foothills of the northern Drakensberg mountains. We pass the Sterkfontein dam and descend the 17 km long Oliviershoek pass and into the spectacular Royal Natal National Park.
Day 2: Drakensberg loop to Underberg and Sani Pass
300km. We continue south past the central Drakensberg towards the southern 'berg and the town of Underberg. We have the option of exploring the famous Sani Pass towards Lesotho en route.
Day 3: Underberg to Wild Coast
359 km. Today we enter the Eastern Cape and ride along winding tar and gravel roads through rural villages to the secluded Swell Eco Lodge on the Wild Coast.
Day 4: Rest day at Wild Coast
0 km. Halfway through our journey we get to explore this part of the Wild Coast. Options include canoeing up the river estuary or driving to see the famous Hole in the Wall, or exploring the beach and looking out for whales and dolphins.
Day 5: Wild Coast to Hogsback
390 km. We leave the coast and head inland through the heart of the historic Eastern Cape (including an optional visit to Nelson Mandela's birthplace at Qunu). Our overnight stop is in the beautiful Hogsback - that may possibly have inspired Tolkien's Middle Earth.
Day 6: Hogsback to Patensie
346 km. After a short tour of Hogsback we continue south-west towards the coast. We have the option of riding the beautiful Zuurberg pass near Addo towards our overnight stop at Patensie.
Day 7: Patensie to Baviaanskloof
126 km: Patensie is our launching point for some real gravel road riding through the famous Baviaanskloof - a World Heritage Site that is one of the "hottest" of the world's biodiversity hotspots.
Day 8: Baviaanskloof to Seweweekspoort
300 km. We complete the short remaining part of the Baviaanskloof road before connecting with the famous Route 66 road through Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp. One of the day's highlights is the ride through the awesome Seweweekspoort pass.
Day 9: Seweweekspoort to Cape Town
400km. We bring our trip to an end with a lovely ride along good tar roads through the Cape Fold Mountains through the spectacular Hex River valley and the Du Toit's Kloof Pass en route to Cape Town.
Note: the Baviaanskloof leg is dependant on the level of water at the river crossings and off-road capability of the riders.
