Route Description and Highlights
Cape Town – Southern Tip of Africa – Matjiesfontein – Swartberg Mountains – Garden Route – Tsitsikamma – Wild Coast at Cintsa and Coffee Bay – Sani Pass – Drakensberg Mountains – St Lucia Estuary – Eswatini (Swaziland) – Kruger Park – Eastern Escarpment – Magaliesberg Mountains – Johannesburg
We begin our journey along South Africa's east coast with a ride to the Southern tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas. We then head north-east towards the Swartberg mountains stopping over at the historic and iconic railway town of Matjiesfontein and a night in the Lord Milner Hotel. We then head into the mountains on some good gravel roads, riding through some breathtaking mountain passes - Seweweekspoort and Swartberg pass. After a night in the Karoo town of Prince Albert we cross through the mountains one more time at Meiringspoort and head south to the Garden Route town of Knysna and our overnight stop at Natures Valley. Along the way we'll stop to explore the Tsitsikamma forest and Storms River mouth.
Our route then takes us to Addo Elephant Park where we'll have the chance of an evening game drive. The next day we continue into the Eastern Cape where we head for the Wild Coast at Cintsa and Coffee Bay. On the way we have the opportunity to visit the village of Qunu - Nelson Mandela's birthplace. At Coffee Bay we'll enjoy a rest day with the chance to visit the famous Hole-in-the-Wall. Continuing north-east we ride towards the Drakensberg mountains - the highest in South Africa - and a day trip to the famous Sani Pass that leads into the Lesotho highlands. We spend another day exploring these mountains at Giants Castle Nature Reserve before we head back to the coast via the Anglo Boer War Spioenkop Battle site.
Back at the coast we spend a rest day at St Lucia - a beautiful coastal estuary - enjoying the pristine beaches, rich birdlife, local hippo families and mangrove swamps. Our route then takes us north through Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) stopping overnight at Hlane Game Reserve.
A short ride takes us to Hazyview from where we'll spend three nights in the Kruger National Park. On our final leg we explore the dramatic eastern escarpment at God's Window and Blyde River Canyon before we turn west and route to the Magaliesberg Mountains and finally a short ride into Johannesburg.
"I decided at the last moment to join my son and cousin on an adventure motorcycle trip with Ride Down South. My wife said ‘you’ll probably regret it if you don’t go’. She was right – I’m so glad I went. What a trip.
South Africa totally exceeded my expectations. The beauty and varied geography of the country was fascinating. There were so many highlights, but perhaps the best was travelling the road into Gamkaskloof or the day we spent at Kruger National park, or perhaps the stay on the Wild Coast where the boys body-surfed with dolphins.
Just an amazing lifetime adventure!"
