Itinerary

Day 1: Cape Town Peninsula Tour, 120km

We begin our adventure with a gentle warm-up ride on one of the most scenic routes - a ride around the coastal roads of the Cape Peninsula. We'll enjoy some great aerial views of False Bay and explore the coastline all the way down to Cape Point and back up through coastal villages including Scarborough , Misty Cliffs and Kommetjie. We'll save the highlight for last - a ride along the spectacular Chapmans Peak drive

Day 2: Cape Town to Greyton, 220km

Today we leave Cape Town along more beautiful coastal roads along the east side of False Bay as we make our way to Hermanus. If we are there between July and November we should see the Southern Right whales near to the shore. After a lunch stop we'll ride north through the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde valley before heading to our overnight stop at the small town of Greyton. Along the way we'll cross through the Overberg region with its rolling farmland, Blue Crane birds, Ostriches and some optional gravel roads

Day 3: Greyton to Matjiesfontein, 311km

Today's ride begins in the foothills of the Cape Fold mountains as we ride through vineyards and over the famous Franschhoek pass. Turning north we cross through two more beautiful tarred mountain passes - Bainskloof and Michels pass on our way to the fruit-farming hub of Ceres. Here the landscapes begin to change as we enter the southern reaches of the Great Karoo. Our overnight stop is in the historic Lord Milner hotel in the railway town of Matjiesfontein

Day 4: Matjiesfontein to Prince Albert, 240km

We have slightly more adventurous day today as we explore the rugged Swartberg mountain range with its spectacularly folded rocks. The gravel roads are kept in good condition and are easy to ride. We make our first crossing through Seweweekspoort and then get to enjoy the winding tar-road Huis River pass. We'll get some lunch in the town of Calitzdorp on Route 62 before setting out for the famous awe-inspiring Swartberg Pass. We spend the night in some lovely cottages in the Karoo town of Prince Albert

Day 5: Prince Albert to Knysna, 230km

Today we cross the Swartberg one more time on a beautiful twisting tar road pass through Meiringspoort before heading to the coast via the equally spectacular Outeniqua pass. We also have the option of riding the beautiful Prince Alfred pass on a good gravel road into the Knysna forest

Day 6: Garden Route - Knysna to Cape St Francis, 270km

We don't have that far to ride today but the route is packed with things to see along the way. We'll stay off the main national road almost the whole way, taking the winding passes through the Tsitsikamma region into Nature's Valley, through Bloukrans pass and down to the mouth of Storms River. It's a lovely, scenic ride ride exploring the beautiful Garden Route. Our overnight stop is in the scenic coastal town of Cape St Francis.

Day 7: Cape St Francis to Addo Elephant Park, 140km

Today we continue east along a good secondary road enjoying the coastal scenery and lush farmland before heading north to Addo Elephant Park where we'll have the option to go on an afternoon safari drive to experience the elephants, lion and other wildlife here.

Day 8: Addo to Cintsa, 325km

Our ride today takes us through some beautiful Eastern Cape scenery - farmlands, aloes and rolling hills. We join the coast again at Kenton and then ride north-east along the coast past coastal towns including Port Alfred and East London to the start of the Wild Coast at Cintsa.

Day 9: Cintsa to Mdumbi, 290km

We have the chance to explore the beautiful beaches at Cintsa before getting on the bikes again and looping round to the mouth of the great Kei river where we catch a pontoon ferry to the other side. Then it's time for a coffee break at Seagulls lodge before we head back inland and north and then back to the coast and some winding mountain roads to one of our favourite overnight stops on the banks of the Mdumbi river, right on the coast

Day 10: Exploring the Wild Coast at Mdumbi

Today we get a break from riding and the chance to enjoy the local area, river and beaches. If you are keen for a short ride you can also visit the famous Hole-in-the-Wall just south of Coffee Bay

Day 11: Mdumbi to Underberg, 360km

We head inland today through the rolling hills of the Eastern Cape towards Underberg at the southern end of the Drakensberg Mountains - the highest and most dramatic mountain range in South Africa. Along the way we have the option of stopping to visit Qunu - the village where Nelson Mandela grew up, went to school and herded cattle.

Day 12: Underberg to Giants Castle, Drakensberg, 220km

Before we set out on today's shorter leg we'll have the chance to visit the bottom of the famous Sani Pass route to Lesotho. Even though it's not really possible to ride the rough road on our big bikes, there is a lovely tar road that winds through the foothills to the South African border post. We'll return to our start point for breakfast before setting out for the central part of the Drakensberg at Giants Castle

Day 13: Giants Castle to Spionkop, 180km

It's a short ride to our overnight stop so we'll have the chance to explore the area around Giant's Castle before we leave. It's one of the most scenic and dramatic parts of South Africa with the grand amphitheatre in front of us. In the afternoon we'll have the option of a guided tour of the Spionkop battlefield with a local expert

Day 14: Spionkop to Piet Retief, 275km

Today we head north-east from the Drakensberg on the first of a two-day ride to the Kruger Park. Along the way to day we will pass through more famous battle sites, and some lovely riding through pine forests on our way to Piet Retief

Day 15: Piet Retief to Kruger Park, 320km

Tour of the Cape Peninsula

Day 16: Kruger Park Safari

We have a full day to experience the magnificent wildlife in this top-rated game reserve. A good option is an early morning safari that leaves from our accommodation and returns around mid-day. You could also book an afternoon/evening safari or just relax at the lodge and watch what happens around the Crocodile river in front of you

Day 17: Kruger Park to Dullstroom, 360km

We begin to head west towards our final destination of Johannesburg today, but on the way we'll take a lovely, scenic route along the escarpment with magnificent views over the low country and some of the best tar-road riding in South Africa. Our overnight stop is at the trout-fisihing town of Dullstroom

Day 18: Dullstroom to Johannesburg, 260km

it's our last day of the tour and we can take it easy this morning to enjoy the peaceful setting and even try some trout fishing. After that we'll head west on some good tar roads to our final destination at Johannesburg
